The function will then search the given hash file for the given hash and return the file containing the hash if found. If no hash is given, the function will search the current working directory for all hashes using the hash_file and return the file containing the hash. This could be useful if you want to parse files that are indexed by a database containing the hashes.
This is a very generic hash function that will work on most any hash output. It will not work with hashes that only produce one output. An example where it will not work is a hash that produces a 128bit hash, for which crypt/2 returns a 128 bit hash.
The current implementation does not support hashes for which the hash algorithm is not known. However, such algorithms are not secure anyway. Cryptographers do not recommend users to use such hashes. To get a secure hash one would usually use a hash that was designed for a particular purpose. One example is a two-way hash where the file contents are transformed and the output of the hash is used as input to transform the input again. This way the file is hashed twice. This can be done in the function by passing the hash file name as an extra parameter to the hash function.

You can try to create a hash with a different length and different character distributions as described in the README.md for hashcat-plus by @hops_ch. The degree of difficulty can vary from easy to very hard for different hash types. The more data you have available and the more processing power you have, the more likely you will succeed.
